What is Citrulline?
2025-08-28
Introduction Citrulline, also known as Carbamylomithine omithin, is a non-protein amino acid that can participate in ammonia metabolism in living organisms.
Citrulline is mainly found in the fruits of cucurbitaceae crops such as melons, pumpkins and watermelons, the xylem of the Japanese birch (Betula mandschurica var. japonica), walnut kernels and walnut seedlings. It is also present in small amounts in other crops and foods. Such as fish, dark chocolate, nuts, chickpeas, Onions, mushrooms, almonds and fermented foods, etc. Studies have shown that citrulline exists in the seeds of cucurbitaceae plants in a free state.
Citrulline is what we call a non-essential amino acid. It is not essential because the body can produce this amino acid on its own. However, we can increase the level of L-citrulline in our bodies by consuming foods and/or supplements containing L-citrulline.
Function Antioxidant and anti-aging Eliminating free radicals in the human body through antioxidants and other means can achieve a certain degree of delaying aging. Studies have shown that citrulline can eliminate hydroxyl radicals and alleviate tissue damage caused by free radicals during ischemia, hypoxia and stress. Systematic studies have shown that citrulline has the effects of reducing cellular senescence, protecting DNA from damage, preventing cell cycle arrest, regulating macrophage metabolism and alleviating inflammation. Long-term supplementation of citrulline in elderly mice can produce beneficial effects and improve age-related phenotypes. Strengthen muscle strength and endurance As citrulline serves as a precursor for the synthesis of arginine and can be converted into arginine in many tissues, taking citrulline can effectively enhance the body’s anti-fatigue ability, maintain healthy heart and lung function, improve mental clarity, reduce stress and overcome depression, balance blood sugar concentration, strengthen muscle strength, and improve physical fitness. It has a good effect in sports health care. Prevent male diseases and improve sexual function Studies have shown that citrulline has a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of prostate diseases, including prostatitis, prostatic swelling, prostatic hypertrophy, prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. In addition, citrulline can cause the human body to produce nitrogen oxides, and these nitrogen oxides can improve male sexual ability. And citrulline can be fully absorbed with relatively few side effects.
