What is the difference between Sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid?

Sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid are closely related but have some differences in terms of their structure and function in skincare.
1. Chemical Structure Hyaluronic Acid: This is the naturally occurring form of the molecule found in the skin, joints, and connective tissues. It has a larger molecular size. Sodium Hyaluronate: This is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, which is derived by combining hyaluronic acid with sodium. It has a smaller molecular size than hyaluronic acid.
2. Molecular Weight and Skin Penetration Hyaluronic Acid: Due to its larger molecular size, it primarily works on the surface of the skin, providing a protective barrier and locking in moisture. It’s excellent for hydration but doesn’t penetrate deeply into the skin. Sodium Hyaluronate: With a smaller molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate can penetrate deeper into the skin layers, delivering hydration from within. This can lead to more plump and hydrated skin from the inside out.
3. Efficacy in Skincare Hyaluronic Acid: It is effective for immediate surface hydration, making the skin feel smoother and look dewier. It is ideal for providing a quick hydrating boost. Sodium Hyaluronate: Because of its ability to reach deeper skin layers, sodium hyaluronate is often preferred in skincare products for long-term hydration, reducing the appearance of fine lines and promoting skin elasticity.
4. Stability Hyaluronic Acid: It can be less stable and more prone to degradation. Sodium Hyaluronate: More stable and has a longer shelf life, making it a common choice in skincare formulations.
5. Use in Products Many skincare products contain a combination of both hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate to provide both surface and deep hydration.
Summary Hyaluronic Acid: Best for surface hydration and creating a moisturizing barrier on the skin. Sodium Hyaluronate: Penetrates deeper into the skin for long-lasting hydration and improved skin texture. Both are excellent ingredients for maintaining skin hydration, but sodium hyaluronate is generally considered more versatile due to its deeper skin penetration.
